Daniella Penko

Daniella completed her degree in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the University of South Australia in 2009. She then joined the Transplantation and Immunobiology Laboratory in 2010 to undertake Honours in islet transplantation, for which she was awarded First Class Honours. Daniella has continued to work as a Research Assistant in the lab following her Honours year. Islet transplantation is currently limited by apoptosis of the insulin-secreting β-cells and suboptimal revascularization post-transplant. Her work currently is focused on improving the success of transplanted islets using vascular Endothelial Progenitor Cells, which have the potential to promote islet survival and engraftment.
