Claire Jessup

My primary research interests focus on the vasculature of the pancreatic islet, and the relevance of cell signalling to diabetes. The dense network of intraislet capillaries is crucial for the sensitive detection of blood glucose and release of insulin. Many islets die when they are disconnected from their blood supply for transplantation purposes - limiting the success of islet transplantation. As part of the Islet Transplantation and Dendritic Cell Biology Laboratory (Royal Adelaide Hospital) and in collaboration with Dr Claudine Bonder in the Centre for Cancer Biology we are investigating the use of endothelial progenitor cells to swiftly reconnect the blood supply to transplanted islets and improve their function and survival.
